It took a jury 14 hours to find wealthy landowner Adrian Prout guilty of murdering his wife Kate, who disappeared without trace more than two years ago.

Although her body was never found, evidence about the couple’s turbulent marriage and bitter divorce battled convinced jurors that Prout, 45, had killed her and hidden her body, and he was jailed for life.

Bus leaves with girl, 5, on board

A terrified mother watched helplessly as the driver shut the door in her face and drove off after claiming the vehicle was full – with her five-year-old daughter on board. Claire Raddon frantically shouted after the bus as it drove into the distance with little Jessica, who excitedly jumped on first, still on board. Claire had an anxious 15-minute wait until a friend who was on the bus rang to tell her Jessica was safe. She was eventually reunited with Jessica and her experience featured in the Express, Mirror and Mail.

Britain's tallest schoolgirl

Emma Cahill is the schoolgirl everyone looks up to – because at 6ft 5in she is Britain’s tallest teenage girl. Proud Emma, who has size 14 feet, towers above her classmates and teachers. She has her clothes specially made in the US but claims she wants to keep growing to catch up with her dad – who is just an inch taller. Emma says she has always risen above the bullies and is extremely proud to be crowned Britain’s tallest female teen. Driver has lucky escape

A grandma had a miraculous escape after a giant tree fell during high winds and collapsed on her car. Lucky Chris Challinor narrowly avoided death when the 65ft beech tree toppled on the bonnet of her VW Polo. The stunned gran of six had to be extricated by fireman but amazingly walked away from the vehicle unhurt. Her incredible story appeared in the Mirror, Star, Sun, Metro and Telegraph.

Have-a-go-hero pensioner

A brave pensioner stormed into his local newsagent and disarmed a hooded gunman. Derek Armiger, 65 wrestled the yob to the ground at the shop in Frome, Somerset, before sitting on him and calling the police. During the struggle, the gun discharged, narrowly missing Mr Armiger’s head and smashing the shop window. He was later given a bravery award by police for his actions. Double Duck

A farmer was shell-shocked when spotted twin ducklings from the same egg. Roger Olver saw the two beaks poking out of the shell, Romulus and Remus are thought to be the first recorded twin ducklings to hatch and survive in the UK. The cute animals were kept as pets on Roger’s farm in St Austell, Cornwall. The story appeared in the Daily Mirror, telegraph, Express and Metro after Mr Olver spoke to South West News Service.

A woman was stunned when she spotted her favourite £10 silk coat bought from a jumble sale 48 years ago on the front of a TV magazine being worn – by the Queen. Gaynor Andrews, 57, inherited the turquoise coat from her mother Margaret who snapped up the garment at a Sea Cadets jumble sale in 1961. The organiser of the sale in Epsom, Surrey, told Margaret the regal coat had come from ”high up” but refused to reveal it’s exact origin.Gaynor was left speechless when she spotted the exact same silk coat being worn by Her Majesty The Queen in a photograph taken in 1953. Hero gives £10,000 reward to rape victim

A Good Samaritan who received a £10,000 reward for helping catch a rapist hit the headlines when he gave the money to the victim. Lloyd Gardner, 22, handed the cash to the woman, who was left crippled by the vicious attack, because he felt she deserved it more. Lloyd, who only earns £20,000 a year as a waiter, offered police vital information which led to the conviction of rapist Jakub Tomczak. Pet cat terrifies postmen

Royal Mail bosses threatened to blacklist a couple because after their postmen became terrified of the families vicious pet cat. Posties claimed the pet moggie Magic burst through the cat flap and mauled them every time a piece of mail drops through the letterbox. Owners Sam and Tariq Enan-McKinnon said their pet is a placid, cuddly creature who would not hurt a fly and have never seen him attack anyone.
